The Center For Sleep Medicine Offers Oral Appliance Therapy For Snoring And Sleep Apnea As An Alternative To CPAP Therapy

Press release June 28, 2014 Chicago Insomnia Treatment

The Center for Sleep Medicine (http://www.sleepmedcenter.com) includes a fully qualified team of people with experience in the methods and care of insomnia patients. When indicated, oral appliances are offered as one of the therapeutic measures.

Orland Park IL, 27-JUNE-2014 - The Center for Sleep Medicine is pleased to announce that oral appliance therapy for sleep apnea is one of the solutions offered to patients in the Chicago area, as well as from the Naperville, Des Plaines, Orland Park and Libertyville locations. The Center for Sleep Medicine is a network of five centers. Each Chicago Insomnia Treatment location is an accredited member center of the American Academy of Sleep Medicine.

According to a sleep center representative, "Oral appliances which treat snoring, obstructive sleep apnea, and upper airway resistance syndrome are devices worn in the mouth similar to sports mouth guards or orthodontic retainers. They are made of plastic and fit partially or completely within the mouth. Currently there are over 40 different professional types of oral appliances available. The most common types are the MRD - Mandibular Repositioning Device, and the TRD - Tongue Retaining Device."

He continues, "Oral appliances may be used alone or in combination with other means of treating sleep apnea, such as weight management, surgery and CPAP. There is no one particular appliance that will work for every patient. Our dental providers here at the Center for Sleep Medicine have specialty training in this area. Both Dr. Sosenko and Dr. Schwartz are Diplomates of the American Academy of Dental Sleep Medicine, one of the most highly respected dental organizations dedicated to improving quality of lives of those suffering with snoring and obstructive sleep apnea issues."

Over-the-counter night mouth guards for snoring and apnea are not recommended. Boil and bite devices may be masking obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), a life threatening condition in which a person stops breathing repeatedly through the night. Unsupervised wearing of these devices can lead to permanent side effects including: permanent dental damage, tooth movement, and jaw problems. Due to its non-professionally supervised process, the potential for failure is high, discouraging fittings with professionally designed and custom-made oral appliances.
