Talent Shortage - The Greatest Opportunity Ever for Young Translators

One of key events from Academia Rossica at this year’s London Book Fair was their annual award for young translators of Russian literature. The award includes cash prize opportunities to meet British publishers and travel to Moscow.

One of key events from Academia Rossica at this year’s London Book Fair was their annual award for young translators of Russian literature.  The award includes cash prize opportunities to meet British publishers and travel to Moscow. 

Robert Chandler, one of the prominent modern translators of Russian literature revels existence of acute shortage of talent in this field.  British publishers have pipeline of translation projects, cash, and great difficulty finding new translators. 

Alex Labrom who is going to study Russian in Oxford is confident that events organised by Academia Rossica will help and encourage young translators. 

Another promising young translator is Peter Blackstock, shortlisted as one of the top 5 best young translators for the second year in row. Let’s see what Peter has to say about this shortage of young translators. 

Constance Garnett, one of the first pioneers of Russian literature dedicated her entire life to translation after a short visit to Russia back in 19^th century.  Her personal inspiration resulted in wonderful translations of Tolstoy, Chekhov, Turgenev and many other Russian writers who can now be found among the best selling classics of all time.  

Let’s hope that foundation laid here by Academia Rossica and their promising young translators will bring us many more treasures of Russian literature in the future.
