Prestigious Swiss brand to act in official timekeeping capacity throughout rugby tournament.
The Rugby World Cup is due to kick off in New Zealand on the 09 September with the hosts taking on the Pacific island of Tonga. With excitement building in the run up to the opening game, the tournament is adding new sponsors.
One of these will have an integral part in the matches as the Official Watch and timing partner. The holder of the prestigious role will be TAG Heuer watches, one of the world’s foremost manufacturers of luxury timepieces.
The history of TAG Heuer watches goes back to 1860 and the company made a significant impact when it introduced the first dashboard mounted in-car chronograph in 1911. Its fame began to spread around the world with the introduction of a range of wristwatch chronometers in the 1960s. TAG Heuer is widely credited with being the first company to offer an automatic chronograph. Their sporting pedigree is well established and features a long involvement in motorsport, in the classic racing movie ‘Le Mans’ starring Steve McQueen.
The deal with the 2011 Rugby World Cup will go far beyond branding and will involve providing event timings and other timing assistance to the officials. As one of the most prestigious brands in the luxury watch industry, the Swiss manufacturer will draw upon its considerable experience in the world of sports timing to assist with the showpiece event.
In a press release issued to mark the sponsorship, Rugby World Cup Chairman Bernard Lapasset said: "We are delighted that TAG Heuer has joined the impressive portfolio of commercial partners. The creation of this commercial opportunity with one of the world’s most recognisable brands further enhances the enormous prestige and attraction of Rugby World Cup in the global market place.”
The tournament is set to be the biggest celebration of the sport yet staged. It will feature participants from 20 nations. The first games for the Home Nations will be Scotland vs. Romania on 10 September.
