POWELECTRICS ENGINEER WINS PRESTIGIOUS AWARD

Press release October 3, 2009 Electronics

OLIVER START YOUNG ENGINEER OF THE YEAR

BEEA AWARDS IMAGE

Powelectrics, a Tamworth based electronics innovator, is delighted that work on their latest product development, in the field of remote monitoring, has led to Oliver Start (25) winning the prestigious Young Design Engineer of the Year Award at the British Engineering Excellence Awards (BEEA).

The BEEA judges wanted to see a demonstration of the knowledge which the young engineer has had to apply; the contribution made to a project; the degree of innovation applied and the nominee’s personal qualities.

Oliver first came to Powelectrics in 2005 completing a year in industry as part of his studies at Birmingham University. His enthusiasm and ability impressed his colleagues, absorbing information from the sales and application engineers and incorporating this into his designs. He returned to Powelectrics in 2007 after completing his degree. Oliver’s win is as a result of his work on the design of a new hi-tech ‘telemetry’ device called the Metron2. The judges said: “Oliver Start is a very impressive young man who gets things done, who has clearly communicated with all stakeholders in the projects and who has delivered with those needs in mind”.

The Metron2 is designed to compete at the price-sensitive end of the gsm/gprs telemetry market. It proves that a compact, reliable and functional telemetry system is now possible at a very low cost. This means that a number of customers, who had previously ruled out telemetry because of cost, can now re-evaluate their projects in the light of this innovative product from Powelectrics.

Full consideration of the manufacturing process was an essential element of the Metron2 design. Using surface mounted components from leading manufacturers and multilayer circuit boards has resulted in a compact device.  By working with key subcontractors Powelectrics has ensured that manufacturing processes are optimised, that reliability is built-in and value, in a wide range of applications, is assured.

Oliver had this to so after receiving his coveted award: “I’m clearly delighted to have won the BEEA Young Engineer of the Year Award, it’s great recognition for the hours I’ve put into the Metron2 project. I’d like to thank the judges and the organisers of the awards and also the Directors of Powelectrics who are extremely supportive of my work”.
