Established in 1981 by the United Nations General Assembly, the International Day of Peace is a directive aimed at all UN member states where any Countries involved in conflict will have a day of ceasefire and a minutes silence to be held both for the victims of war and to promote peace.

UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, in a speech at the Peace Bell ringing ceremony, said "A 24-hour respite from the fear and insecurity that plague so many places. I urge all countries and all combatants to honor a cessation of hostilities. I urge them to ponder the high price that we all pay because of conflict. I urge them to vigorously pursue ways to make this temporary ceasefire permanent."

With over 8,000 British troops still deployed in Afghanistan we hope that for at least for one day they are able to enjoy a day of peace and also their family and friends can be assured of their safety.

A UK company, Order Flowers, based in Ashford, Kent, are offering their own way of promoting peace on 21st September with their very own peace bouquet being offered at half price with free delivery so you can celebrate the day by sending flowers to a loved one.

Operations Director Gary Kay says "It's important for us as a company to be able to give something back to our customers and the International Day of Peace struck a chord with us, knowing that our troops should be safe for at least 1 day is something that should definitely be celebrated. Our in house florists have designed a new bouquet of white lilies and sweet blue limonium which captures the ideals behind International Peace Day in flowers".
