Guess Celebrates its 30th Birthday

The iconic Guess brand celebrates 30 years in fashion

The iconic fashion brand Guess is celebrating its 30th Anniversary this year with a new collection of clothing, watches and other accessories commemorating its foundation.

Founded in 1982 as a boutique line offering designer jeans in top New York department stores such as Bloomingdales, the company has grown in to a style colossus whose latest trends and fashion advice is followed by more than 1.6 million people on the social networking website Facebook.

The company was established by the French-born Marciano family who turned their holiday in the USA in to a residency in Los Angeles, California.  Established in 1981, the name GUESS was conceived during oneof the Marciano brothers’ daily drives down Olympic Boulevard in Los Angeles. Each day the brothers would pass a McDonald’s billboard that read, “Guess what’s in the new Mac?”, thus instigating a comical debate resulting in the company’s official name, GUESS.

By the arrival of the company, denim, which once had been the fabric of the rebel as encapsulated in film icons such as James Dean, had become a standard part of American dress, losing its cutting edge.  The Marciano’s saw this as an opportunity to combine their European style with a traditional American fabric. Their journey began with the introduction of the Marilyn Jean, a slim-fitting, stonewashed, three-zip ankle jean.

The company has been responsible for some of the most memorable advertising images of the recent past.  It has become known for launching the careers of several “GUESS Girls” including Claudia Schiffer, Eva Herzigova and former French first lady, Carla Bruni. The newest addition to the group has been actress Amber Heard.

One of the brands most iconic moments came in hit 1990’s movie ‘Wayne’s World’ where the advert featuring iconic the previously mentioned supermodel Claudia Schiffer was praised by Dana Carvey and Mike Myers wanna-be tv hosts.

In 2008, GUESS famously collaborated with Canadian, rock star and keen photographer Bryan Adams.  The advert that was created was heavily influenced by screen icon Sophia Loren.

Keep an eye on The Watch Hut over the coming months for more information of the celebrations from the Euro-American classic.
