Glow necklaces use the same technology as glow sticks in order to produce the glowing effect. They are constructed in a tube containing a mixture of phenyl oxalate and a fluorescent dye, with a smaller glass tube inside containing hydrogen peroxide. When the necklace is bent the inner glass tube breaks mixing together the hydrogen peroxide and phenyl oxalate. This chemical reaction produces energy in the form of light. The colour of the fluorescent dye determines the colour of the glow in the dark necklace. Once the necklace has been bent, it cannot be turned off, and will be glowing for hours after the party has ended.
