Furniture sales 'high in Scotland'

People in Scotland flocked to buy furniture in December, it has been claimed

Scottish furniture sales have contributed to retail volumes in December being higher than a year previously, new statistics have suggested. Harveys, a national furniture stores with 20 stores in Scotland supported this with cash being 12 per cent up year on year in the Scottish region against the Scottish Retail Consortium (SRC) and KPMG figure of 1.4 per cent.

According to the organisations, furnishings sold well, with consumers taking advantage of festive deals and clearance promotions.

Items for sleeping areas were particularly prominent, with the report noting: "Upholstery, beds and bedroom furniture were the brighter spots."

Commenting on the results, Harveys’ Regional Manager for Scotland, Peter Doyle noted the increase could be down to people feeling more positive about the economic climate of the year ahead.

Last month, head of retail and wholesale at Barclays Richard Lowe commented that the general public is continuing to show an appetite for big-ticket items - such as furniture - with sales remaining strong in recent months.
