Danish company sets the agenda for facade coatings in the british construction industry

Press release October 7, 2019

With a further development of the technology behind the United States military’s stealth project, which was to reduce the visibility of aircraft on radar, the Danish company Nowocoat has developed a new ground-breaking facade coating for fibre cement and plaster surfaces in Great Britain. The result is a patented facade coating that reflects 90% of the sun’s infrared rays and reduces the surface’s absorption of heat from the sun’s rays by up to 20%.

Better interior climate and more environmentally friendly

When the red infrared rays are reflected, the brickwork absorbs less heat. This means that the temperature is significantly reduced - both inside and outside - and this creates a better interior climate. In addition to reducing the heat both inside and outside of the building (and thereby reducing the need for cooling), Coolingpaint also acts a protective coating on the facade and reduces the need for maintenance. The technologically advanced product is based on HybridTechnology-System™ and includes the anti-fungal and algae-inhibiting additive SlowRelease-Protection™, which means that the additive is only activated in moist weather. At the same time, Coolingpaint Facade is solvent-free and therefore a more environmentally friendly alternative.

“Our focus is always on quality and the environment when we develop new products. Therefore, Coolingpaint Facade offers the market what it wants: a product with no harmful substances. Coolingpaint carries the EU Ecolabel, which is a guarantee that the product meets strict environmental requirements throughout all phases of its lifecycle. This also means that Coolingpaint does not contain heavy metals, softening agents and harmful amounts of solvents. At the same time, it has been quality tested in accordance with international standards for coverage and opacity, UV-stability, adhesion, peeling, blistering, crack formation, high weather resistance, fungal and algal growth, gloss and colour change and the ability to reflect infrared rays,” Ole E. Jensen, Nowocoat’s CEO, explains.

Less CO2 emissions for cooling

For Ole E. Jensen, Coolingpaint is the culmination of several years of intensive inhouse development of the innovative product, and he sees many opportunities for using Coolingpaint to address the climate-related challenges associated with rising temperatures. One of these challenges are called Urban Heat Islands, which are areas in cities where the temperature is significantly higher than in the surrounding natural areas due to people, buildings and machines absorbing and giving off heat. The phenomenon is harmful to both the environment and people’s health, as the rising temperatures once again increase the demand for cooling which results in air pollution and bad interior climates.

“Coolingpaint is one of the products that we expect a lot from, because the potential is so great. Coolingpaint’s properties means that it is interesting in many parts of the world. It requires more energy to cool something than to heat it up, and therefore Coolingpaint can contribute to reducing the still-rising CO2 emissions from cooling units. This also makes Coolingpaint Facade relevant in, for example, construction companies working for both private individuals and businesses,” Ole E. Jensen concludes.

COOLINGPAINT® is available in several types for woodwork, facades and roofs in common standard colours.
