The finals in vaulting are always a spectacle. With France and Germany on top of their game showing fantastic sport in Jyske Bank Boxen, the audience knew they were in for a day of treats.

Queen Manon
They may not have a monarchy in France, but the French individual vaulter Manon Moutinho showed everybody, why she is at the top of the FEI rankings. Throughout the first two rounds of the competition her level of vaulting was admirable. All the pressure was on her shoulders coming to Denmark as the winner of the World Cup in the spring. But she delivered on the highest level and did a beautiful freestyle scoring an incredible 9.296, keeping her well in front of her competitors securing her the gold medal, as the first French female individual ever, on the horse Saitiri with lunger Corinne Bosshard.

Julia Sophia Wagner from Germany took the silver in her first ever championship together with her lunger Katja Wagner and horse Giovanni 185. Even though her freestyle was a little rocky, she felt that the luck fortunately was on her side, and with the smallest margin of 0.018, she managed to keep Danish Bronze medalist, Sheena Bendixen, in the third place. Julias overall score was 8.529. Sheena scored a 8.511 in her final competition as a vaulter. After winning bronze at the European championships as a junior in 2011, it is almost poetic, that her career ends with World Championship bronze as a senior. With the same horse, Ramstein, and the same lunger, Lasse Kristensen, as in 2011.

French dominance in the male competition
The fanbase following reigning world champion, Lambert Leclezio from France, is huge from all over the world. Since the vaulter entered the vaulting scene from as far away as Mauritius and later changed his citizenship to France, the vaulting world has been in awe of his talent. This world championship is his last. But what a way to end his career. From the first round to the final, like Manon, he kept his cool even though it was very emotional for him to go into the arena. Stunning the audience with his flexibility, smoothness and exiting choreography, he took the gold with his lovely horse, Estado, and lunger Loic Devedu.

The French vaulters dominated the men’s competition, and they took the Silver as well, with the young vaulter Quentin Jabet chasing his teammate through three rounds. His freestyle on the horse Ronaldo 200 with lunger Andrea Boe, was so lovely on the eye, taking us though a routine totally free of mistakes and insecurities, definitely proving that he is one for the future. He scored 9.032 for his freestyle with an overall score of 8.837.

For Jannik Heiland everything was open going into the final round with five of the male vaulters having a score of 8.5 from the first two rounds. But he showed us, why he has been in the top of the sport for so long with a stunning freestyle getting an overall score of 8.833, giving him the third place and the bronze medal with what he calls his one-in-a-lifetime-horse, Dark Beluga, and lunger Barbara Rosiny.

Germany and France butting heads
The team competition was anticipated for everyone. Because no one had seen the French freestyle before, but with gold- and silver medalist on the team, it looked like a win on paper. But Germany brought their A-game into the arena, delivering a freestyle leaving everybody in awe of the beauty and fluency and coordination. Wauw! 9.063. But was it enough?

The pressure was on the French Team going into the arena right after the German team. The freestyle was really, really good, with lots of exciting exercises like we know the French can do it. But not without flaws, and the marks did not fall out in their favor scoring 8.869, giving them a total of 8.549 and the silver medal. Germany got a total of 8.614 and ended the “fight” by snatching the gold medals together with lunger Patrick Looser and the horse Calidor 10. The French team was on the horse Londontime lunged by Corinne Bosshard.

Team Switzerland did a beautiful freestyle and took the bronze medal with an overall score of 8.279 on the horse Rayo de la Luz and lunger Monika Winkler-Bischofberger.

On Wednesday the fight for the final medals continues with the Nations Cup and the final in the Pas de Deux.
