Launch of the EPA report "STRIVE: Innovation for a Green Economy - Environment and Technology: A win-win story" by Mr. John Gormley, T.D., Minister for the Environment, Heritage and Local Government.

Mr. John Gormley T.D., Minister for the Environment, Heritage and Local Government today (29 June 2009) launched a new report by the Environmental Protection Agency entitled "STRIVE - Innovation for a Green Economy - Environment and Technology: A Win-Win Story".

In acknowledging the EPA's very positive commitment to environmental research and to the development of environmental technologies, the Minister spoke of the contribution that environmental research is making to the development of Ireland's Smart economy. He added that "Environmental research and innovation can not only equip us with the tools to address the environmental challenges we face, but can turn these challenges into real opportunities."

The report highlights the contribution that EPA funded research under its Science, Technology, Research and Innovation for the Environment - or STRIVE - programme is making to the development of environmental technologies in Ireland. It gives a brief snapshot of the type and variety of environmental technologies and cleaner production research funded by the EPA so far, along with details of the next steps in the area.

"The work funded through the STRIVE programme is showing us how to respond to environmental problems in a new and creative manner, employing solutions generated by research initiated and progressed right here in Ireland", the Minister said.
 
The Minister congratulated the EPA for the compilation of the report showcasing the innovative research and development being carried out under the STRIVE programme.  He also thanked the research teams involved for their invaluable contribution to the Government's effort to protect and enhance the quality of our environment for all.
