You may find that your local library carries a directory of attorneys that you can use. They may be listed according to their specialty, or alphabetically. You will also find that these listings are available through a referral system found in the phone book. You would need to call the referral office, and they will ask you what you are looking for, what area you need the attorney to be in, and they will refer you to a lawyer on their list. 

The Internet is, of course, another way to find an attorney for your needs. You may use your favorite search engine to find one that specializes in what you need him for. According to the websites that you are referred to, via your search engine, you can see the types of cases they take, and the various attorneys that are available at that particular firm. Then you would need to contact them and inquire about your case. 

There are also services in your community that will refer you to attorneys that either charge very little, or will work for free. If you go to your local courthouse, you may have a case for which an attorney can be appointed to you.

He should not just take your money and not contact you for months at a time. If this does happen, you need to contact the office of that attorney and keep reminding them of your case. They have many, so you need to be the one to update everything as it happens. Keep notes yourself. It can only help in the long run.
