Liverpool’s world-famous Cavern Club has revealed plans to expand its empire with new venues in North and South America and the Far East.

The new Caverns, created in collaboration with local representatives in Brazil, Canada and China, are part of a long-term vision to build the club’s unique brand across the globe.

The first Cavern in Brazil is due to open in São Paulo later this year.

In Canada, a licence has been granted to Vancouver-based Everything Liverpool, which is planning a rollout of Cavern Clubs and Pubs across the country, with the first venue set to open in the next 12 months.

And as the China market continues to grow, the country’s capital Beijing is also in line to get its own ‘best of cellars’.

They join existing Cavern Clubs in the Argentinean capital Buenos Aires and in Osaka, Japan, which have both been open for 20 years.

The announcement comes as Cavern Club directors, including John Lennon’s sister Julia Baird, along with the venue’s resident Cavern Club Beatles, prepare to travel to North America this month for a week of high-profile events on the West Coast.

A special screening of a new documentary film – The Cavern Club: The Beat Goes On – will open the annual BritWeek in Los Angeles on April 24. The film, which was made as part of the Cavern’s 60th anniversary celebrations, will be introduced by Julia Baird and followed by a live performance by the Cavern Club Beatles.

BritWeek was inaugurated in 2007 by Nigel Lythgoe and the then Consul General Bob Peirce, and each spring it hosts a programme of events in California promoting British creativity, innovation and excellence across a range of categories from film and television, music, art, fashion and design, to retail, sport, philanthropy and business.

The Cavern party will then travel to Vancouver to join Norwegian Cruise Line’s Norwegian Joy, which is the third of the company’s vessels to launch a ‘Cavern at Sea’. The successful partnership with NCL started in 2015, and the vision is to eventually have a replica of the most famous club in the world on each ship in the cruise line’s fleet.

The Cavern Club Beatles will perform on board during the newly-refurbished Norwegian Joy’s inaugural cruise, while Cavern Club directors will take part in public events over the course of three days, before disembarking in Los Angeles.

They will then travel on to the Newport Beach Film Festival where the Cavern Club documentary has been chosen as part of the official selection to be screened at the prestigious annual movie event.

Cavern Club director Bill Heckle said: “After 27 years of owning The Cavern, we’ve always had visitors from all over the world. It has become, for many, a place of musical pilgrimage.

“However, not everybody can make this journey so we’re delighted to be taking our beloved club to the world.”

Fellow director Jon Keats added: “The Cavern Club opened just over 62 years ago, and what started off as a humble cellar club in a backstreet of Liverpool has grown into this worldwide brand.

“The Beatles, Liverpool and the Cavern Club will be forever associated, of course, but there’s much more to the Cavern. In many ways the strength of the Cavern brand mirrors that of Liverpool itself in terms of its position on the world stage.

“All new Caverns will be individual venues but must have some key elements in terms of design, so expect to see the famous Cavern stage along with relevant, archive posters, images and authentic memorabilia.

“One of the other requirements for any associated new Cavern is to follow our music policy.

“As a brand we quite rightly celebrate our rich musical heritage including The Beatles and all of the other major artists to have performed at the venue, but, as the Cavern Club always has, we also support new, up-and-coming artists.

“This will very much be reflected in any new, licensed Cavern Clubs.”

NOTES TO EDITORS

The Cavern Club opened its doors on January 16, 1957 as a jazz club modelled on the famous Paris nightspot Le Caveau de la Huchette. The opening act was the Merseysippi Jazz Band.

Skiffle groups including the Quarrymen were allowed to play at the club but it was not until the early 1960s that it became a regular spot for blues bands and beat groups.

Between February 1961 and August 1963, The Beatles made 292 appearances at the club.

The original Cavern closed its doors in 1973 to make way for work on the city’s underground railway loop, with a replacement venue opened on the opposite side of Mathew Street. That club later became Eric’s.

The current Cavern was reopened on April 26, 1984 at the original address.

Cavern City Tours Ltd took over its running in 1991 and in the past 28 years the venue has played host to a stellar line-up of artists including Oasis, Tom Robinson, Travis, Arctic Monkeys, Adele, Jessie J, Jake Bugg, Monkee Micky Dolenz and Sir Paul McCartney.
