2017 Bi-City Biennale of Urbanism\Architecture Art and Architecture join to explore "Cities Grow in Difference"

A number of well-known architects and artists will exhibit their works on the exhibition floor and jointly discuss the urbanization and urban village issues from various perspectives.

The Vertical Village Frans Parthesius

The 7th Shenzhen-Hong Kong Biennale (Shenzhen) (UABB) is scheduled to open on December 15, 2017 at the main exhibition siteNantou, Shenzhen. The theme of this exhibition isCities, Grow In Difference, which aims to cover alternative urbanization experience and pioneering experiments from a global perspective.A number of well-known architects and artists will exhibit their works on the exhibition floor and jointly discuss the urbanization and urban village issues from various perspectives.

Art and urban architecture meet

Due to its long-standing attention to urban villages, this year’s UABB will not only be held within an urban village but will invite art and architects to understand and present their opinions on the everyday life of urban villagers.

Huang Heshan, a graduate of Tsinghua University Academy of Fine Arts and author of "Wild Design," conducted a "furniture exchange program" with the villagers in Urban villages to pay attention to the evolution of the urban village social system and explore contemporary forms of art. In addition, the American anthropologist and artistMary Ann O’Donnell, who has lived in Shenzhen for over 20 years and is known as “Old Ma” in the circle of veterans, will present her work together with her studio “Handshake 302” which will look at the unique changing architecture, city life, and culture of Shenzhen.Zhang Chao, China’s famous architectural photographer, will display his work “First Stop, Bai Shi Zhou”,  which showcases his insights to life within an urban village.

Architecture Masters of East and West meet

This year’s UABB features names from both the East and West that are sure to interest its global audience. Also known as the “father of architecture”,Chang Yung Ho,and other Chinese architects likeLiu Jiacun, will meet with architects from the West.Nader Tehrani, founder of NADAA Studio and Dean of The Irwin S. Chanin School of Architecture, will also exhibit his works onsite. Tehrani’s “Parametric Design” concept will interact with Zhang’s and Liu’s Eastern influence, reflecting the dynamic nature of UABB.

HuBei 120: Understanding Shenzhen’s last ancient village

Saving Shenzhen’s last ancient village from the facing the bulldozer?HuBei Old Village has caused controversy due to its urban development. HuBei Old Village inspired discussion over the amount of knowledge in villages, and whether conservation efforts should be enforced to maintain the long-standing history of the villages.. Should commercial interests be placed over historical legacies? UABB aims to explore solutions to these questions.
