EMBASSY THREATENS DANCERS
Pressemeddelelse november 17, 2006 KulturUGANDAN EMBASSY DENMARK: DONT DANCE OR ...
Ugandan dance company threatened by Ugandan embassy in Copenhagen to not dance at Hornsleth Art OpeningAs you know the Hornsleth Village exhibition is going to be open today in Copenhagen. Yesterday the Uganda foreign minister urgently requested the Danish government to close the show before it opens. The case is direct intervention into the freedom of speech and the freedom of art in a country of the European Community. Today the case got worse they urged the Ugandan dance company”faces of Uganda” not to perform at the opening event. They did that by putting hard pressure on the dancers and also told them this could have serious consequences for their families in Uganda.
This is not acceptable to any democrat in Denmark who believes in the freedom of speech, the freedom of arts and the freedom of will. The dancers are scared and do not want to risk any harm to their families in Uganda. Right now they try to get in touch with the government in Uganda to clarify the case.
This story is far beyond an art show of a Danish artist in Denmark. This is a threat to any kind of democratic idea Denmark and the rest of Europe believes in. It shows that Uganda is far away from a democratic idea of freedom of speech. This is in this way a unique case, because we are not aware of any action of this kind over the last ten years in Scandinavia.
Every democrat in Europe should stand together and fight for the freedom of art. Let the ugandian government know: All democrats agree on the case: 'Let the people dance!”
