Perhaps you have tried to order a plane ticket online, where you had the opportunity to climate compensate yourCO2 -emissions? Spectators are also given that opportunity at the World Equestrian Championships in Herning.

So, if they have jumped in the car or on a plane to experience the World Championships and would like to compensate for theCO2-emissions, the organisers have offered a solution that makes it possible to compensate through supporting a forest project in Brazil.

It is part of the many sustainable initiatives at the Championships and made possible through a collaboration with the offsetting company First Climate.

"We know that it is something completely new that you, as an audience at an event, can be given the opportunity to climate-compensate for your transport. But we are very happy that some of our visitors have taken the chance to do so and have decided to pay a little extra to support a green project as compensation for theCO2-emissions, Jens Trabjerg, one of the Organisors", says.

Visit Herning and support forests in Brazil

The offsetting is done by visiting First Climate's stand at the World Championships. Here you scan a QR code with your phone, and then you type in how you traveled to the Championships in Herning, whether you are staying overnight, etc., and then you get the calculatedCO2-emissions converted into an amount that you can pay with a credit card on the spot. It's easy and only takes a moment. You don't have to download anything, and no data is passed on to anyone. It's all voluntary.

"It is a completely new approach, and of course it is not something that thousands of guests have used. But it has given rise to many good conversations, and it helps to raise awareness that our transport emits a lot ofCO2," says Jasper Steinhausen, Sustainable Business Consultant at the Championships.

"Equestrian sport has not previously had sustainability on the agenda, but we do now. We hope that in the future, as a matter of course, you will compensate for your transport and travel climate-neutral."

National confederations support

Herning2022's approach toCO2has been to minimize it where possible - and then offsetting the rest. And that is also what the audience encounters.

"The biggest climate impact stems from the transport to and from the venue, but it is impossible to organize an event without accredited riders, horses and not least visitors. That is why we have chosen to offer the possibility of offsetting", Jasper Steinhausen says.

The international equestrian federation FEI has also wanted to be part of the solution, and several national equestrian federations have also agreed to pay extra to participate to contribute to offsetting by supporting a wind energy project in Turkey together with the Championships – also in collaboration with First Climate.

"As an organiser, it is of great importance for us that the sustainable measures are supported. The World Championships is a strong platform, and we use it to create something good. It makes me proud that we can leave a positive impact", says Jens Trabjerg.
